With over $5 million in funding and Bill Gates on its list of investors, Carbon Engineering is currently building a sub-scale pilot plant to remove carbon dioxide (CO2)—the main greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming—from the air. In 2013 the company expects to begin engineering an integrated pilot that will be the first industrial-scale plant to capture CO2 from the air. This ambitious target has made the company a contender for Richard Branson’s $25 million Virgin Earth Challenge Prize. The technology is derived from forced-draft cooling towers used in power plants and chemical processing equipment used in pulp and paper production.
