Alberta is Canada’s fastest growing nanotechnology and advanced materials cluster and home to some world-class innovator leaders in this space. As of May 2008 the cluster was 42 companies strong: 31 are active Alberta-based companies (profiles start p.10), 6 have corporate R&D programs in Alberta, and another 5 are not yet ready for publicity. Of the 37 companies profiled in this article, 20 are nano-based (54%), 13 are MEMS-based and 4 have a composite or ceramic technology.

Nanotechnology means manipulating and controlling atoms and molecules to create useful materials, devices and systems that have new and different properties from what we normally see in our everyday world. Key concepts: nanoparticles, MEMS, Lab on a Chip, Carbon Nanotubes, Cleanrooms and Bunny Suits. Nanotechnology and MEMS fall under the broader class of material science called advanced materials, which covers all man-made engineered materials with superior properties.

Canada’s province of Alberta is bursting with activity in nanotechnology and advanced materials. Its nanotechnology research flagship—the world-class NRC National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT)—isn’t the only talk of the province. There are many other first-rate initiatives to support research, development and commercialization in this cluster in Alberta.
